As a mom who spent the day watching my daughter’s lacrosse tournament, I couldn’t help but notice the number of sunburns on the field and was pretty shocked considering all we know about the damage the sun causes our skin and how you can pick up sunblock literally ANYWHERE these days. Despite the excitement and energy, the harsh sun took a toll on many young athletes and coaches. It was a stark reminder of the importance of sunblock.
Here are three very big reasons why athletes, coaches, and the spectators, should always wear sunscreen, how often they should reapply it, and when it should be replaced. Let's ensure our girls and their mentors stay safe and protected under the sun.
1. Prevention of Skin Cancer
One of the most crucial reasons for wearing sunscreen is to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation is a significant risk factor for developing skin cancer, including melanoma, which can be life-threatening. For our girls who spend hours practicing and playing under the sun, the risk is even higher. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher can provide much-needed protection against harmful UV rays, ensuring their skin stays healthy now and in the future.
2. Avoiding Painful Sunburns
Sunburns are not just uncomfortable; they can be quite painful and debilitating, affecting both athletes and coaches. Red, swollen, and sometimes blistered skin can make wearing sports gear and participating in activities very uncomfortable. Severe sunburns can also increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. By applying sunscreen regularly, we can prevent these painful sunburns, allowing our girls and their coaches to focus on the game rather than their sore skin.
3. Maintaining Healthy, Youthful Skin
The sun’s UV rays can cause premature aging, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots. While our young athletes might not see these effects immediately, continuous sun exposure without protection can lead to long-term skin damage. By wearing sunscreen daily, they can maintain healthy, youthful skin and avoid premature aging signs. It’s a simple step that makes a significant difference in the long run.
How Often Should Sunscreen Be Reapplied?
To ensure maximum protection, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours. This is especially important during intense physical activity, as sweat can reduce the effectiveness of the sunblock. For our lacrosse players and coaches who are constantly moving and sweating, reapplying sunscreen during breaks or halftime is essential. Always keep a travel-sized sunscreen in your sports bag for easy access.
When Should Sunblock Be Replaced?
Sunscreen can lose its effectiveness over time, so it’s important to check the expiration date. Typically, sunscreen has a shelf life of about three years. However, if you notice any changes in texture, smell, or color, it’s best to replace it sooner. Additionally, if the sunscreen has been stored in hot temperatures, like in a car or under direct sunlight, it might degrade faster and should be replaced more frequently.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
For optimal protection, select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that guards against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a water-resistant formula with an SPF of at least 30. For those with sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen that is free from fragrances and parabens. Remember to apply it generously to all exposed areas of skin, including the face, ears, neck, and any other areas not covered by the uniform.
As a mom, seeing so many sunburns on the field today was a powerful reminder of the importance of sunblock. Let’s protect our lacrosse players and their coaches by ensuring they apply sunscreen regularly and reapply it as needed. Sun protection is a crucial part of their health and well-being, and it allows them to focus on enjoying the sport they love. Share these tips with your fellow parents, coaches, and athletes to keep everyone safe under the sun.
By following these guidelines and encouraging our athletes and coaches to prioritize sun protection, we can ensure they stay safe, healthy, and ready to give their best performance on the field. Let’s make sunblock an essential part of every game day routine!
